As well as being Colombia’s most important airport, "El Dorado" is Latin America’s busiest in cargo movements, and the third in passenger traffic. In 2010, almost 19 million people used this airport, which facilities were getting too small to absorb such volume of passengers.
Although at the beginning of the works the intension was to remodel and extend the existent facility, current and future traffic demands changed the plan in 2008, which turned into demolish some buildings and built a practically new airport.
